Over the course of the series, the team get involved in disastrous mishaps leaving them without money, while often confronting faces and events from their past: these include Jet's reasons for leaving the ISSP, and Faye's past as a young woman from Earth injured in an accident and cryogenically frozen to save her life. They are later joined by Faye Valentine, an amnesiac con artist Edward, an eccentric child skilled in hacking and Ein, a genetically-engineered Pembroke Welsh Corgi with human-like intelligence. The original crew are Spike Spiegel, an exiled former hitman of the criminal Red Dragon Syndicate, and Jet Black, a former ISSP officer. The series' protagonists are bounty hunters working from the spaceship Bebop. Amid a rising crime rate, the Inter Solar System Police (ISSP) set up a legalized contract system, in which registered bounty hunters (also referred to as "Cowboys") chase criminals and bring them in alive in return for a reward. In 2071, roughly fifty years after an accident with a hyperspace gateway which made Earth almost uninhabitable, humanity has colonized most of the rocky planets and moons of the Solar System.

Credited with helping to introduce anime to a new wave of Western viewers in the early 2000s, Cowboy Bebop has also been called a gateway series for anime in general. The English dub was particularly lauded, and is regarded as one of the best anime dubs. It garnered several major anime and science-fiction awards upon its release, and received unanimous praise for its style, characters, story, voice acting, animation, and soundtrack. It was a critical and commercial success both in Japanese and international markets, most notably in the United States. Since its release, Cowboy Bebop has been hailed as one of the greatest animated television series of all time. In 2001, the series became the first anime title to be broadcast on Adult Swim.

Its most prominent themes are existential ennui, loneliness, and the inability to escape one's past.Ĭowboy Bebop was dubbed into English by Animaze and ZRO Limit Productions, and was originally licensed in North America by Bandai Entertainment (and is now licensed by Funimation) and in Britain by Beez Entertainment (now by Anime Limited) Madman Entertainment owns the license in Australia and New Zealand. But a mysterious and powerful group of young female vigilantes, calling themselves The Knight Sabers have sworn to protect the city against the Boomer rampage and corporate crimes. The abuse of the Boomer technology unleashed a wave of cyber and techno terrorism, which the regular police and Secret Service are unable to stop. Genom's main product are Boomers, synthetic humanoids and advanced robots designed to help mankind in exploration of space. The story takes place in 2032 after the old Tokyo was destroyed by a massive Kanto Earthquake and was taken over by a global consortium called Genom. I loved the series so much that although I didn't understand the language, the action and excellently drawn anime characters and machines kept me under their spell. I saw the Bubblegum Crisis series in original Japanese language when they made their debut in the United States in the late 1980's.
